del.icio.us Firefox add-on and keywords

I just noticed the other day that the del.icio.us add-on for Firefox allows one to save keywords.  This is yet another score for this fantastic tool as there is one less thing to maintain in each browser instance; I can now rest assured that I’ll have my Firefox keywords synchronized wherever I go.

For those of you who don’t know what keywords are in Firefox, they allow you to choose a specific string for a bookmark that can be typed in the address bar, rather than clicking on the bookmark itself.  For example, if you often visit the del.icio.us site (http://del.icio.us), you could bookmark it and assign it the keyword ‘del’.  From that point forward you would just need to type ‘del’ in the address bar.

I didn’t know how delicious was saving these keywords until today when I noticed that each of the items I had saved with keywords have the tag ’shortcut:<keyword>’.   So using the above example, if you bookmark http://del.icio.us using delicious and you want to assign it the keyword ‘del’, then along with any other tags, also enter ’shortcut:del’.  Alternatively, keywords can be assigned using a two-step method by first tagging it, then editing the tag with the add-on.  For whatever reason, the keyword field is not available when initially adding a bookmark with the add-on.

Finally, search keywords can also be saved in delicious.  The delicious add-on will add an item in the context menu over search text fields labeled “Add a Keyword for this Search in Delicious”.   The window for adding the search keyword does have the keyword field available (which is an obvious thing, aside from the fact that it’s not there for regular bookmarks).
